Nina Simon, the executive director of the museum, is an expert in participatory design and fantastic facilitator. I like this alternative to sticky dot voting! Next we did a series of small group exercises for participants to identify their stress triggers and reactions to stress. Here’s a quick video.

The participatory element employs an accessible speculative question. The participatory element is modeled well by the "official" content. It's available, but it's not the point of the whole exercise. There is no wrong answer to the question, "what do you imagine this thing might be in your wildest dreams?"

I love alternative history novels. I was thinking I’d do a few alternative histories of museums for the first post of the last month of the decade. As I imagined a world without Nina Simon ’s Participatory Museum , I felt sad about all the visitors whose voices (and post-it note comments) weren’t honored.

but I felt like I didn't have any alternative formats to draw on. Here are my three big takeaways from The Art of Gathering : Hosting is an exercise in courageous leadership. I didn't know how to kick off a productive conversation, make group decisions, or close a meeting with energy. The weird thing is that that wasn't true.

We've created an alternative website to provide a more participatory version of the standard pre-conference informational site. I'm hopeful we'll get a good group who can spend the morning of the 31st together hiking and talking about our creative goals and dreams going into the retreat.

I've written before about techniques for talking to strangers, looking at how buttons , buses , and dogs and can all be tools for participatory design. I used that instruction recently to kick off a meeting at a museum planning a participatory education space. These activities are not always grounds for participatory encounters.
