Amazon’s smallest smart display has gotten the tiniest of refreshes Amazon recently updated a couple of its Alexa-based Echo Show smart displays. The Echo Show 5 also has a handy feature that lets you tap the top of the device to snooze an alarm, which is easier than trying to say “Alexa snooze” when you’re half awake.
And despite how these devices process your voice, how you view your voice history and utterances in the Alexa app isn’t changing. Comparatively, these new ones that have the AZ1 built in can handle the audio on-device, thus limiting the amount of time it takes to give users a response.
Hunches — which are part of Amazon’s broader Alexa smart home platform — are AI-driven decisions that use data from your Alexa smart home to decide what to do with your temperature. These functions are available to any smart thermostat that works with Alexa, but you will not find one as inexpensive as this one. So, tradeoffs.
The new Show is the first smart display that can follow you around Since its inception in 2015, Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant has always been a disembodied digital form trapped in a box of electronics. The only smart home platform that the Level Lock works with is Apple’s HomeKit, and you need to have a HomeKit hub (such as an Apple TV, HomePod, or iPad) set up in your home to use it.
And you also get a newer Alexa voice remote in the box with app shortcuts and a handy shortcut to live TV programming. Amazon bundles the latest version of its Alexa voice remote with the new streaming stick. You’ve still got to press and hold the Alexa button for voice searches or smart home commands.

In my experience, Siri is typically faster to respond and do something than either Alexa or the Google Assistant, whether that’s to play music, answer a question, or control a smart home device. You can use the Echo Show for video calls to the Alexa app on phones or other Echo Show devices, or you can join Skype, Zoom, or Amazon’s Chime calls from it. Unsurprisingly, Ring integrates very well with Amazon’s Alexa, and can be set as the default security system for Alexa Guard , which turns your Echo speakers into security sensors that can listen for the sound of glass breaking or smoke alarms going off.
