Finally, make it mandatory that the subscriber enter his their zip code only if your organization plans on doing advocacy campaigns via e-mail or group text messaging. Use Third-Party Widgets Only if They Add Value. The Web has become overrun with widgets! As a general rule of thumb, keep widgets off your home page.

In the summer of 2000, I launched an e-advocacy portal called eActivist.org. Many nonprofits have concluded prematurely that social media does not directly contribute to online dollars raised because amounts given through Facebook, Twitter or MySpace apps and widgets have been relatively low.

I wish at the time I had Steve Bridger's excellent analysis and roundup of using widgets or charity badges for fundraising or advocacy, focusing on examples from the UK and beyond. Steve points out a new widget in the UK called Carebadges and notes it aspires to be the yellow bracelet campaign of the web. Well done Steve!
