My colleague, Julia Campbell, has just published a book, “ Storytelling in the Digital Age: A Guide for Nonprofits ” and was kind enough to share an advanced copy. This comprehensive book covers the following: Part One addresses storytelling readiness, especially now to transform your nonprofit’s culture.
To avoid being repetitive by listing these best practices in each of the chapters dedicated to social networks, those universal best practices are: 1. Prioritize storytelling over marketing. There are universal best practices that can be applied to all social networks. Your nonprofit is not a person.
That’s where storytelling comes in. In this article, I’m going to talk about the common challenges of explaining non-profit impact and go over the action steps you can take to explain your non-profit’s impact through storytelling. What new journey or chapter begins in their life? What do they receive directly and indirectly?
I did a quick scan of data visualization resources to look for practical advice on the process of thinking visually and some technical information on what chart to select and data storytelling. The deck provides specific practical advice on charts, color, and maps. I like the chart advice: Avoid 3d-charts at all costs.
Now I am lucky if I can get through a first chapter much less read an entire book in less than 6 months. You are not going to be a very good storyteller if you don’t read stories. My mind wanders after a couple of paragraphs even when reading New York Times Bestsellers. In 2013, I am focused on changing that.
