So I felt lucky last week to learn not only about an innovative arts exhibition employing geocaching, but to discover that its exhibit developer, Seth! Geocaching Basics Geocaching is an activity in which people (geocachers) use GPS receivers to hunt down specific locations (geocaches). Traveling public art!

I used the example of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, which has a mission statement that includes unusual words like “bold” and “fearless.” I worked on one project in which the client institution thought they wanted unfettered teen expression. To help jumpstart these relationships, we did one of my favorite activities.

I was particularly interested in the ECHO project and Bryan's comments about the lack of in-house technical staff in museums and how that affects ability to innovate. The back-channel was an especially active and important part of the conference this year. The Walker Art Center is turning its teen website over to the teens.

The last two weeks of the contest, Amy and 10 others worked 8-10 hours a day blogging, emailing supporters, making phone calls, and recruiting teens and college students to help them towards gathering donations for the Cause. It was great to see grandparents, parents, young adults, and teens all working together to support orphaned children.

At the big one, I worked on a small project with teens to design science exhibits for community centers in their own neighborhoods. I also learned that the best money in museums for someone who's starting out is in art modeling. I survived the first half of 2003 financially on art modeling and poetry gigs.

This seems a little ungenerous to museums; while institutions may bestow more love upon wealthy, elderly donors than the general visiting public, museums have actively courted mass audiences for years. We're always happy for more bodies in the door, but if supporting teens means alienating seniors, there's a problem.

In the case of MN150, staff historians worked actively to verify and connect with contributors on any contentious topics. In Children of the Lodz Ghetto, every data entry is verified by staff in a three-step process as well as reviewed and commented on by other users.

They were in a playful mood, talking about the objects, playing the games, responding on the comment boards. When I walked by the first time, the teens were collaging and Kyle and Stacey were talking. Next time, everyone was talking.
