Dodd served in the Peace Corps in the Dominican Republic from 1966 to 1968, and then joined the U.S. In 1974, he was the first former Peace Corps volunteer to be elected to the Senate. They would receive academic credit for participating in 70 or more hours of service-learning activities each semester.
