There are open source LMS, some of which are quite well developed, and some also geared toward (or developed by) colleges and universities.

Disadvantages to cloud computing Depending on the vendor and the application, you are dependent on them to keep the application up and your data intact. Your data is not directly in your hands, but in the hands of a third party. If the provider goes belly up with your data, you’re toast. Make sure access is secure.

There are issues that relate to encoding, fonts, and character sets, machine translation, interfaces to facilitate human translation, issues of workflow, volunteer and project management, and a whole host of other issues. If ten similar nonprofit organizations came together to build a system that would work for them, they each would get 10 times the software that they could afford individually.
