My overall predictions are that most things will be pretty much the same as last year (and 2010 and 2009, etc.): many nonprofits will struggle with out-of-date systems. It’s such an interesting space, and there are some really intriguing things happening with software in that space. I can’t wait to get my grubby little fingers on the data on CiviCRM and Salesforce.

I have not been blogging because I've been at the NTEN NTC Conference , the premier event for nonprofit techies taking place in San Francisco. NTEN had also set up a google application that lets people vote on questions which how they decided to handle the Q/A in a room of 1400 people.
There are some fabulous sessions proposed for the 2009 NTC , running the whole gamut of nonprofit technology, from planning to Web 2.0, That’s an interesting model, and, if the software is decent, sounds like it could be a good option for some organizations. But, of course, as with anything, look (a lot) before you leap.
It also gets kudos from NTEN’s satisfaction survey (it came in third, after CiviCRM and Salesforce.) But, I’d send the query to both the nptech-related groups (like nten-discuss and nosi-discussion) as well as the Sugar folks – you might get some answers. 2 admin 04.20.08
In 2008, NTEN began asking the community to tell us what they thought of the tools they use. In summer 2009, we went looking for a better way. Life would definitely be easier if there was one piece of software that could do everything we needed it to, from donor management to email blasts. Of course, life is rarely that simple.
NTEN keeps surprising me with cool stuff for nonprofit tech peeps. The application deadline for this year’s prize: September 1, 2008. Last year’s winner was Barry Warsaw, lead developer of the awesome Mailman mailing list manager. Ruby Sinreich is a new phenomenon ! You go girl! And I’m on the board!

As a 10,000 footer, NTEN’s new Donor Management System Survey is of keen interest. Mostly because, although I actually know the field pretty well, it’s at the 10,000 foot level, rather than the 50 ft level that clients really need. There is, of necessity, a lot of overlap betwen CRM systems and Donor Management Systems.
