One of the best examples of the use of APIs are Google Map mashups. These are using data in your own databases, and grabbing maps from google maps and putting them inside your application. I think that APIs are an expression of the best of what the internet is about. But I have a first take.

Ushahidi has been developing open-source crisis mapping software for over eight years now. LABB created an Oil Spill Crisis Map in response to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010. Since then, it has since logged, mapped, and tracked more than 14,000 reports of petrochemical pollution. So much innovation.

There were two different kinds of APIs discussed – the ones that help organizations with interoperability within their organizational systems – getting data from one app to another, and using APIs for things like Google maps mashups. It seemed that only Blackbaud had APIs you have to pay for. at 7:56 am Michelle- Great summary.

Yahoo set up 100 Internet-linked computers at the Astrodome and developed a meta-search of evacuee registration websites. Problems were that many survivors had no internet access, let alone electrical power, let alone computers or even computer literacy. I will explain the use of mapping, fundraising, and crowdsourcing.
