Pencils of Promise (PoP) was founded in October 2008 to help build safe and healthy learning environments for young children worldwide. To date, Pencils of Promise has built nearly 600 schools worldwide, and over 130K students are currently enrolled in those schools.

The 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing is providing leverage for Tibetan, Darfurian, Burmese and Chinese human rights campaigns: The International Campaign for Tibet created the Race for Tibet. We believe China and the IOC should be held accountable to the promises they made during Beijing's bid for the 2008 Olympics."

Gateway to the Arts is a Pittsburgh-based organization that exposes young people to the arts through performances, classroom visits by professional artists, and integration of arts into school curriculum, all with a staff of six. In 2008, Gateway to the Arts was in need of a major overhaul.

I think about how hesitant I was to become an artist, because I didn't see role models, and even to this day how hard it is for me sometimes to find peers who are women of color, because of how systematically they are pushed out. I'm an artist and an institution builder. The kind of art I do is art that gets engaged into the public.
