I decided several weeks ago, for a variety of reasons, to retire my independent consultant hat. Being an independent consultant was, for me, a way to feel like I was using my skills for the greater good. I’ve been doing this work for more than 10 years now, full time for about seven of those years. And, I think I did that.

My theory of practice is different than my consulting philosophy. Actually, a client had a grant proposal, and it included the consultant’s “theory of practice&# which of course is something that most organizational development/effectiveness type consultants have, but rather few technology consultants have.

It’s a conference that is an event of the Institute for Politics, Democracy and the Internet. I’ve never been – online politics has never really been my focus. But I’m quite looking forward to it. I’m looking forward to talking about free and open source software to this audience. {
I’m also holding the consultant spot on the panel “ Changing your CEO from barrier to partner &# with Marnie Webb, David Geilhufe, and Steve Heye. I’m looking forward to it. I’m on the Evaluating Open Source panel, with Laura Quinn and Catherine Lane, which should be great.

They’ve just released a beta version (sorry, Mac only, for once) of a new platform for internet video, called DTV. Downhill Battle , which is an organization people interested in the whole "copyfight" issue should know about, has a new project, called Participatory Culture. This is very cool.
