So for the next few tools, I’ll be describing CRMs (Constituent/Contact/Community/Customer Relationship Management). The first one is one that I’ve been using recently for my consulting business – SugarCRM.
It can bring in your photos (and the photos of your contacts) from flickr. Today, I’m talking about Flock. Flock is the “social browser.&# For bookmarking, it uses your del.icio.us It can keep track of your Twitter friends, etc. You can also use it as a blog editor, which I am going to start trying out. It’s amazingly good.
Soon, we’ll be updating the primer , releasing a report on our survey, starting a training and consulting program, doing a webinar series … phew! And, I think I also get to educate the varied vendors and developers I’ve been in contact with. Lots happening! And, I get to be agnostic.
CiviCRM has 4 basic components: CiviContribute, CiviMail, CiviMember, and CiviEvents – which allow you to track contacts, donations, members, send out email blasts, have event registration, etc. It originally came out of the idea of making moving eBase (the CRM based on Filemaker Pro) to the web.

July 9, 2007 So I talk a lot about both open source software, and the preciousness of one’s own data. So, here is a real life example of someone with a measly 195 records in her contacts database. Its the client I use at work, but I have even fewer contacts than you do. It sometimes tastes yucky. 3 abenamer 07.10.07

I have become fascinated by the ways the CRM/Fundraising space is changing so rapidly.
August 7, 2007 I’ve been experimenting with the non-content centered social networking sites LinkedIn and Facebook for a while now. But once you put that data out there, and you have contacts who can see it, you’ve lost control of that data – any of your contacts could make that data about you public.

Constant Contact (a SaaS provider of email delivery) uses IBM DB2. For open source, that translates into 10-15 hours of a consultant’s time- less than 2 days- where a vendor can provide unlimited support for an entire year. Other companies in the NP space are similar. I believe eTapestry runs on a database package called Versant.
August 9, 2007 It’s been 7 weeks of using Ubuntu 7.04 (better known as Feisty Fawn) as my primary desktop. The Mozilla Foundation supposedly has been working on an integrated email/calendar/contacts system, but they are spinning off Thunderbird , and Sunbird (the calendaring app) is coming along slowly.
While using free personal accounts on LinkedIn® allows our recruiting team access to many profiles, we also use paid accounts to allow us to dive deeper into the site and perform searches based on name, keyword, title, company, location, industry, or group (potential employees, consultants/contractors, hiring manager, etc.).
