I had a healthy second life as a slam poet, and I loved the world of artists and performance. I applied to work for This American Life (rejected) and in the meantime fell in love with someone who lived in Washington D.C. For the second interview, I even built a little lie detector and brought it in.

They received over 4,000 submissions from all 50 states, which were judged by a panel of seven—including museum staff and outside artists. The top 100 selections were sent to Washington for final judging. Some of these artists, regardless of the status of their submission, continued contributing to the site for a year.
