I can't say that any one experience--working on a collage with other visitors, swinging on a hammock, discovering a participatory display for pocket artifacts in the bathroom--directly contributed to increased attendance and giving. They all have in concert, and they build on each other.

To that end, our exhibitions are full of participatory elements. Riding the art couch through downtown Santa Cruz with two visitors and a dog while blasting the Jackson 5 was one of the highlights of my year. Evergreen Cemetery Board Game. Visitors can comment on how we can improve or what they would like to see.

They were “preaching the museum gospel” in NYC via alternative tours at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. We interacted with the art and with each other through dynamic photo challenges, kinesthetic activities, and conversations. Heck, I even learned about a 17th century German drinking game. They're playing video games. We assume that adults don't want to do crafts or play games--that they want the "serious" stuff. There are many participatory experiences that appeal primarily to adults, and they are designed distinctly for adults. They're going to trivia night. And herein lies the self-fulfilling prophecy.

I've seen this line of questioning almost completely disappear in the past two years due to many research studies and reports on the value and rise of participation, but in 2006-7, social media and participatory culture was still seen as nascent (and possibly a passing fad). In 2008, the conversation started shifting to "how" and "what."

Today, the Luce Center at the Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) is launching what they claim is the first ever alternate reality game (ARG) in a museum. Why would an art museum create an ARG? All motivation to play comes from the players themselves, since it's not clear where the game is going or what the point is.

So far, most participatory museum design projects are heavily guided by the institution. MN150 will have formal summative evaulation, which is wonderful.

On 8.16.08, the Museum of Art and History (Santa Cruz, CA) hosted FreelanceCamp, a free unconference that brought 150 designers and techies from the south bay area together to talk shop. Several libraries have started to offer gaming nights where you can drink soda and play Wii to your heart's content. Projects participatory museum.
